چکیده

It is generally considered that there exists in quantum radiation theory an indetermination in the separation of the respective effects of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction. We show in this paper that such an indetermination can be removed by imposing to the corresponding rates of variation to be Hermitian (this is necessary if we want them to have a physical meaning). Such a procedure is generalized to the case of a small system S interacting with a large reservoir R and allows the separation of two types of physical processes, those where R fluctuates and polarizes S (effects of reservoir fluctuations), those where it is S which polarizes R (effects of self reaction). We apply this procedure to an atomic electron interacting with the radiation field and we then identify the contribution of vacuum fluctuations and self reaction to radiative corrections and spontaneous emission of radiation. The analysis of the results obtained in this way allows us to specify the physical pictures which must be associated with the various radiative processes. J. Spontaneous excitation of an accelerated atom: The contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction.

We consider an atom in interaction with a massless scalar quantum field. We discuss the structure of the rate of variation of the atomic energy for an arbitrary stationary motion of the atom through the quantum vacuum. Our main intention is to identify and to analyze quantitatively the distinct contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the spontaneous excitation of a unifor...

From Vacuum Fluctuations to Radiation: Accelerated Detectors and Black Holes

The vacuum fluctuations that induce the transitions and the thermalisation of a uniformly accelerated two level atom are studied in detail. Their energy content is revealed through the weak measurement formalism of Aharonov et al. It is shown that each time the detector makes a transition it radiates a Minkowski photon. The same analysis is then applied to the conversion of vacuum fluctuations ...

Vacuum Fluctuations of Black Hole Radiance

The emergence of Hawking radiation from vacuum fluctuations is analyzed in conventional field theories and their energy content is defined through the Aharonov weak value concept. These fluctuations travel in flat space-time and carry trans-planckian energies sharply localized on cisplanckian distances. We argue that these ⋆ 1 features cannot accommodate gravitational nonlinearities. We suggest...

Generalized Unruh effect and Lamb shift for atoms on arbitrary stationary trajectories

We study the spontaneous de-excitation and excitation of accelerated atoms on arbitrary stationary trajectories (“generalized Unruh effect”). We consider the effects of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction separately. We show that radiation reaction is generally not altered by stationary acceleration, whereas the contribution of vacuum fluctuations differs for all stationary accelerated t...

Radiative energy shifts of accelerated atoms

We consider the influence of acceleration on the radiative energy shifts of atoms in Minkowski space. We study a two-level atom coupled to a scalar quantum field. Using a Heisenberg picture approach, we are able to separate the contributions of vacuum fluctuations and radiation reaction to the Lamb shift of the two-level atom. The resulting energy shifts for the special case of a uniformly acce...
